Name: Fred
Species: Ornate Box Turtle (Terrapene ornata)
Hired: Took my time getting here, but I’ve been dazzling everyone ever since
About Me:
Hi, I’m Fred—the flashier cousin of George and the best-dressed reptile at Riverbend. My intricate shell pattern isn’t just for show (though it is pretty fabulous). I’m a land-loving turtle who enjoys warm, open spaces and a good patch of grass to chill in. Life’s all about balance: a little sunbathing, a little foraging, and a lot of looking unbothered.
Fun (and Shell-tacular) Facts:
-
My shell’s fancy yellow lines make me look like I’m wearing designer armor. Nature’s couture, if you will.
-
I can completely close myself inside my shell—privacy is self-care.
-
I prefer wide-open habitats like prairies and grasslands, where I can strut my stuff.
-
My diet’s pretty classy: veggies, flowers, and small fruits (presentation matters).
-
I’m known for my independence—box turtles like me don’t wander far, but we always know exactly where we belong.
-
With good care, I can live up to 40 years. Slow and steady really does win the race.
Favorite Snack:
Fresh dandelion greens with a side of fruit—bonus points if it’s served al fresco.
