Name: The Hissers (you can call us that)
Species: Madagascar Hissing Cockroach (Gromphadorhina portentosa)
Hired: Straight from the forest floor of Madagascar to Riverbend’s ambassador team
About Us:
We might be small, but we bring a lot of personality to the room—mostly in the form of our signature hissing. You’ll find us strutting our stuff on leaf litter, logs, or wherever the spotlight hits. We’re here to prove that cockroaches can be charming, loud, and surprisingly impressive… especially if you respect our personal space.
Fun Facts:
-
We hiss through holes in our abdomens—alarm, mating, combat, and territorial hisses all included. Basically, we’ve got a full soundboard.
-
Males are territorial and can stand on their “toes” to make sure everyone knows it. Those big bumps behind our heads? Totally functional—they’re battering rams and part of our charm offensive.
-
We’re the largest roaches in the world.
-
Females can give birth to 20–40 babies. That’s a lot of coworkers to manage!
-
Our natural diet is decaying plant material, but we don’t mind a side of lettuce or dog food.
Favorite Spot:
Leafy nooks, cozy logs, or wherever we can hiss without interruption.
